The Explorers
Two Key Roles
The Lead Explorer (The Mentor)
An adult, grandparent, or teacher who shares personal memories and acts as the keeper of local stories.
The Little Explorer (The Adventurer)
A child who listens, colours, and asks questions to build a deep connection to their home.
The Three-Step Journey
1. DISCOVER — Spark Curiosity
Introduce short stories or local traditions to open the door for meaningful conversations. Meet the animals of Newfoundland and Labrador and listen for the sounds they make. Notice who lives in the woods, barrens, bogs, rivers, shoreline and ocean.
2. CREATE — Share the Moment
Families draw or write together, prioritizing shared connection over artistic perfection. Bring each page to life with your voice, your imagination, and your own family stories.
3. BELONG — Make it Last
Record names, dates, and stories to turn creative activities into physical family keepsakes. Every page you read, every sound you make, and every story you share helps your Little Explorer feel connected to the wild, wonderful place we call home.
A Note for Explorers
Squish, Squelch, Splash! is not just a book to read. It is a shared adventure. Through the Made of Place™ Framework, this book invites children and grown-ups to discover Newfoundland and Labrador together — not only through words, but through sounds, questions, laughter, and memory.
